A Needle’s Eye Book & Lamp

Created as a test for a sliding box design and a nine panel book fold, the “A Needle’s Eye” book is made of laser-cut plywood, 13.5″ x 13.5″ x .125″, in an edition of 30. Each book folds to 4.5×4.5×1″, was originally enclosed in a 5.25×5.25×2″ slide-top box, and is hand stained with non-toxic ebonizer and hand sewn. The text, a quote by William Butler Yeats, reads:

“All the stream that’s roaring by
Came out of a needle’s eye;
Things unborn, things that are gone,
From needle’s eye still goad it on.”

For some reason I made SO MANY of these books – out of the original 30 made in 2015, I still had 16 books remaining in 2023, so I decided to combine them together into a lamp. When sewn together into a grid of four by four books, the resulting 13.5″ x 13.5″ x 58″ high column fit perfectly on a LED multi-color lamp with remote and floor switch.
