Ridge, River, Range Columns

All pieces: birch plywood, cotton thread.

Range Column (largest), 96″ high x 14.5″ wide x 14.5” deep, $795

Ridge Column (medium size), 80″ high x 12″ wide x 12” deep, $595

River Column (smallest), 68″ high x 6.5″ wide x 6.5” deep, $395

“River, Ridge, Range Columns” is a grouping of three freestanding wood structures measuring a total of 96x36x24” as a group. Each column began as hand-drawn art from a favorite Alaskan place: the braids of the Placer River, striated waves of rock near Glacier Bay, and the Chugach Front Range. I digitized the drawings, used my 65W CO2 laser cutter to make interlocking wood panels, added acrylic inks in colors reminiscent of the landscape, & sewed them by hand into the final structures. Despite the subtraction of most of the wood, the pieces are surprisingly strong & reveal different overlapping patterns depending on the viewer’s height and perspective.

Longbrake Ersatz Canyon laser cut wall panel

Ersatz Canyon

Birch plywood, cotton thread. 55″ wide x 33″ high x 0.25″ deep, $500

“Ersatz Canyon,” a 55×33” wood panel, began as a collage of canyons in Alaska, Arizona and Utah: I combined the best of the plant life, walls, and water in each place into half of the canyon drawing, digitized it, mirrored the halves, and cut the panels with my laser cutter. I used bookbinding stiches to sew the final structure. The final piece hangs just away from the wall to create additional shadows reminiscent of the movement of water.

Tidepool Mirror

Birch plywood, glass. 36″ high x 36″ wide x 1.5″ deep, $500

“Tidepool Mirror” is a 36” round mirror with overlaid, layered, laser-cut wood. I’m fascinated by tidepools as miniature worlds, and this piece was a chance to build a flowing, circular composition as a drawing, break it down into pieces small enough to cut with my laser cutter, and create a cohesive structure around a reclaimed mirror. Water-based inks were used to add soft colors to the natural birch tones. The edge of the mirror is integrated into the piece just as a pool of water would be surrounded by rocks, plants and tidal organisms from Kachemak Bay.
