25 Moons Panel

This panel of twenty-five moon shaped cutouts uses leftover pieces from laser cutting my artist books along with scraps of hand-marbled and hand-painted paper and silver vinyl from my project Vinyl Frontier. I try to utilize as much as possible from the materials I use, especially the unusual shapes leftover from cutting plywood.

Have you heard of the International Fixed Calendar? This alternate calendar year has 13 months with 28 days each, divided into exactly 4 weeks (13 × 28 = 364). This would mean every month is the same, with the same days of the week each month. An extra Year Day, added as a holiday at the end of the year, balances out the calendar to make 365 days/year, plus a Leap Day every fourth year. As a graphic designer and a parent, I love this idea: a tidy grid of 28 instead of awkwardly different months all year would be so much easier to visualize and to explain to kids.
