Wearable Art

Wearable art, including a dress made of bicycle sprockets and other bike parts, a dress made of twigs, and a fancy white suit made of grass seed bags and salvaged fabric from Object Runway 2012, 2013, and 2014.  The sprocket dress won People’s Choice in 2012.  Object Runway is a benefit for the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in Anchorage, Alaska and hosted at Bear Tooth Theatre Pub.

Wearable Arts 2016 at Bunnell Street Arts Center

Title: Free Motion Kuspuk

Materials: Salvaged linens and packing material

Inspiration: This piece is inspired by my mom’s amazing sewing talents, handmade childhood kuspuks, and longing for the wilderness of Alaska. The freehand quilting design echoes the flora and fauna of Kachemak Bay, and the recycled materials epitomize my mom’s resourcefulness in creating something both useful and beautiful out of what others might throw away.

Technique: I created the reversible fabric for this garment with freehand quilting on a CNC long arm quilter.
