Vision Gallery hosted From Thin AiR II, an exhibition by past and current artists in residence at TechShop Chandler, May 25-June 2. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the opening reception!
- “Little Bones”, 30 framed laser cut pieces with magnetic back. Framed as 24 x 30 x 2.5″ shadowbox with steel backing.
- “A Thousand Cuts”, series of 4, 12 x 12 x 2″ each. Hand- and laser-cut layered paper.
- Planet and moon quilts, 60 x 60″ each. Digitally printed, CNC quilted cotton, featuring the moon (Luna), Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Europa. Can be displayed with white quilting on black fabric (backing) or with the face of the planet/moon showing.
For this second artist in residence showcase, I wanted to include the primary modes of making that I’ve learned at TechShop. From the laser cutter to the CNC quilter, the technology available at TechShop’s maker space has allowed me to pursue a range of concepts and materials in search of the common thread that ties together my wide-ranging interests. Circular motifs, iteration, pattern, and a combination of hand craft with digital tools have emerged as themes in this work. I’ll continue to explore these ideas as I move from Arizona back to my home in Alaska in summer 2017. Access to this equipment and the expertise of TechShop’s staff has opened a Pandora’s box of ideas and means of implementation that I’ll adapt to a new studio and outdoor environment.
